Q: Why / when / how did you start to work with performance, what is your background, how did you arrive at doing performance?
For me performance art is a vehicle of expression that I couldn't include in sculpture. During my education, I realized that working in the field of sculpture has a lot of limits. I've also started getting the feeling that working in a space such as a studio or gallery is somewhat artificial, abstract, framed and rather closed. First, I started to go out from these closed spaces with my obects to the street, observing peoples' reactions. Then I've changed the object with my body and presence.
Q: What is your process like when you make a performance, from idea to actual work?
There is no scheme to this process. Sometimes I just get the ready idea in my mind and sometimes I work for a very long time, adding or removing succeeding elements. It's comparable to working with a sculpture made from clay.
Q: Can you tell about your latest project?
Paradoxically, my latest work - Babel Project - is an object, which will be created by its receivers. Together with Agnieszka Szablikowska, we designed an Internet social platform allowing for the creation of a sculptural model. The final result of the entire development process will be the creation of an actual object located within the public space. The Babel Project is open to every Internet user – everyone can become the co-author of the created object, and the site has translations in the 10 most popular languages of the world. This project would not be possible without the experience of performance.
Q: What role does performance art have in your life / artistic praxis. Do you also work within other fields, like installation, sculpture, drawing, other expressions. How do they influence / inform each other?
When I began to make performance art, I rejected other forms of art and I focused just on it. That was the result of being tired of formal education and the academic approach to sculpture. For several years I made just performances, actions, interventions or video-performances, but lately I have begun to make objects again. Objects which are somehow performative, egalitarian and open to the viewer.
Q: With what kind of form / material do you express yourself and use in your work and how did you arrive at using this material?
Because of my background, I sometimes use the elements and techniques of sculpture, but it's not a rule. More often the place of action is what determines the kind of form. The space is also important for me in the process of creating the performance.
