Interview with Hiroko Tsuchimoto

Vaasa, Finland, 23 October
2015
Q: Why / when / how did you start to work with performance, what is your background, how did you arrive at doing performance?
I started my career in textile art. I chose performance art because it is easy for me to communicate through this media. Performance art is progressive, provocative and flexible.
Q: What is your process like when you make a performance, from idea to actual work?
In my performances, I usually interact with the audience. I often have stories as a starting point. It can be personal experiences, old folk tales and/or current events.
Q: Can you tell about your latest project?
Right now I stay and work in Finland b y participating in an artist in residence program. I am working with a project called FADING SMOKE which summarises the one month residency. My focus is on the social impact of transitions in the local area of Brändö, during the last quarter century. I chose an old factory site as a stage and invited the audience to a site specific performance. In this project, I am commenting on the universal purpose of "Progress" in our lives and present a hidden question mark in an urban narrative. This leads to an open discussion about the future of the island as well as our global economic system.
